My first student teaching placement was at Brunswick Junior High School, teaching 6th, 7th and 8th grade students.
During my time at Brunswick Junior High School, I made an original project for the 8th graders that was a Dreamscape Painting project. I'm a painter in every sense of the word, dabbling from realism to abstraction, and I knew I could make a unit that would engage the 8th graders given my content knowledge in painting.
It took time, and a lot of trial and error with formative test runs, image searching and color picking, but the results were amazing. So many students got into the process, painting became a relaxing activity with a comfortable learning environment, and the journey created enough engagement that no one was worried about the outcome.
Had I not known what I do about painting, this project would have possibly not turned out the way it did. But, it turned out in a way that made previously unengaged students engaged, students who may struggle with dexterity a moment to try something different, and a path for students with a million ideas to try something out on canvas.
